Write a 650-750 word argumentative essay arguing that beauty for Thomas Aquinas is both objective and subjective (see pg. 61 in Vaughn’s Writing Philosophy for a sample argumentative essay). Explain how beauty can be both ‘in the eye of the beholder’ (ie. subjective) and at the same time an objective property. Does the claim that beauty is both subjective and objective create a paradox, a contradiction, or something else? Use at least one anecdote, such as an example in art, film, music, etc., to help support your position, and ensure that you use ideas or direct quotes from either Aquinas or Jacques Maritain (see Lesson 14 and 15 class readings) to make your case. The essay will be evaluated based upon how well it fulfills the following elements:
Thesis. A focused thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph which makes clear the direction of the paper.
Organization and Support. The essay transitions smoothly from idea to idea by presenting a clear, logical argument that gives credence to the thesis.
Use of an Opposing Voice. An opposing voice and reply is successfully used to voice at least one premise.
Content. The essay responds well to the assignment instructions and skillfully cites from at least one of the course readings to help make the argument.
Course Mastery. The essay uses terms and concepts presented in the course with conceptual precision to convey real insights.
MLA Formatting. The paper has a Works Cited page and is free from MLA formatting errors.
Grammar and Style. Uses strong/effective word choice with no errors in grammar/spelling/punctuation.Write a 550-750 word argumentative essay arguing that beauty for Thomas Aquinas is both objective and subjective (see pg. 61 in Vaughn’s Writing Philosophy for a sample argumentative essay).
