Description
The essay demonstrates effective selection of five or more credible sources.
The essay clearly explains its topic/problem. The explanation overviews the ongoing conversation on the topic and the topic’s stakes.
The essay articulates a clear claim/thesis statement that is specific and complex. The writer’s claim contributes to the larger discussion and is well supported and explained. The argument is effective.
The essay anticipates a significant objection to its claim through an effective combination of summary, concession, refutation, and evidence. The summary of the opposing viewpoint is specific and objection. The refutation is convincing.
The paper meets all three criteria: 1) each paragraph clearly develops and supports the thesis; 2) each paragraph includes an effective topic sentence; and 3) each paragraph is focused on the main point stated in the topic sentence.
Quotations and paraphrased segments are smoothly integrated into the writer’s prose. The majority of the evidence is summarized. Where quotes are present, they work effectively to provide textual detail or to demonstrate that the summary is accurate to the source.
The essay’s style is appropriate for an academic audience comprised of experts within the writer’s field. The writer largely avoids using slang and informal speech.
The student documents all sources, following MLA guidelines for parenthetical citations and works cited pages. The documentation errors are few, and they do not interrupt the reader’s ability to see where the source material can be found.
Though the paper may include some grammatical errors (such as an occasionally misplaced comma, misspelled word, or sentence fragment), these errors do not distract the reader, they do not make the writer seem careless, and they do not interrupt the writer’s meaning. Generally, the sentences are easy to understand, the syntax is clear, and the writing style is pleasant.
