Information systems are too important to an organization to be left in the hands of one stakeholder. In order for such a system to create value that will allow companies to make better business-oriented decisions, a variety of roles need to be involved. And according to our textbook, that is the entire purpose for the discipline of Management Information Systems (MIS). It combines the work of technical specialists in fields such as computer science and operations research with behavioral specialists such as economists and psychologists (Laudon & Laudon, 2022). Using a sociotechnical approach within information systems allows well-rounded solutions to company issues. Computer specialists can use their expertise to capture and generate the data, while the behavioral specialists can analyze the information to create solutions that align with company values (Laudon & Laudon, 2022). Essentially, the two sides create a book. The technical side draws the illustrations and then the behavioral teams writes the story based on the pictures.
Therefore, no one side should hold the reins to information systems. Investing in such a system is an expensive process. Taking a collaborative approach and having a variety of individuals involved in the generation and analysis of data is essential in order to generate more efficiency and higher profits within an organization.
