Assessment Guidelines
Assessments are designed as building blocks for your engagement with the programme more broadly.
c.4000 — 4800 words
A review of material covered during 3 of our class sessions with a concluding summary piece that reviews the learning evidenced across those three sessions. This means that your final submission should consist of 3 journal entries summarising and reflecting on the reading, lecture material and class discussion of three different weeks and 1 summary section that highlights and analyses any shared or unshared points of learning evidenced across those 3 weeks. This means that the summary piece should demonstrate what you personally take-away from the module and your reflective analysis of module content and discussion.
The journal may be submitted as a written word document. This would break down as:
• 3 separate sections (eg Week 1, Week 2, Week 5), of approx.
1000-1200 words each in length,
with a summary of approximately 1250 words in length,
all submitted as one document.
It must be absolutely clear what works you are referencing, where and for what.
The journal is a building block in your learning. It prompts you to communicate and reflect on your understanding of the material.
How will the weekly journals be assessed? The following areas will be considered
• Completeness: Each journal submission should be focused on 3 weekly entries that summarise and reflect on the week’s reading, lecture material and class discussion, with one final section that brings together all the learning.
• Analytic Content: The extent to which discussion in the journal goes beyond descriiption of what was covered or discussed in class and assigned reading to analysing how this material informs your understanding of the course concepts. The strongest journals will make connections or synthesise concepts with an awareness of multiple perspectives, historical / economic / socio-political contexts, taking into account multiple viewpoints before clarifying their own view.
• Appropriate context and descriiption: While you might focus in more depth on one reading or one area of discussion for each individual entry, you must show engagement with all that was assigned for that week. This means that you should indicate a summary and reflection on all the readings assigned for that week and a brief overview of the content for that week.
• Clarity: Extent of clear and appropriate use of language. Abstract concepts are explained accurately and unambiguously.
• Depth of reflection: Extent of clarity regarding what the class material and discussion got you rethinking, thinking anew, questioning, etc… Extent to which the journal demonstrates how you think you might apply this learning to your practice, to your assessments, and / or to other areas of learning and development.
• Structure and Presentation: clear structure and coherence to the work submitted with clear indication of what works are being used where and for what purpose (eg referencing); appropriate referencing
