Overview: For this 4-6 minute informative speech, you must find 3 interesting points about your assigned section within the
chapter in the textbook, and put together a speech about it, using props. The information you present must be from the textbook.

my assigned section is the blue highlighted chapter labeled ‘MESSAGES VARY IN POLITENESS’
CHAP 4. Verbal Messages,

 Pick 3 (not 2 or 4) main points/facts within the section you are assigned.
 Then write some notes down (key words are best) and decide what you will say to “teach” this
material. You do NOT need to submit an outline for this speech. The information you present must be
from the textbook. However, this does not mean that you repeat the language from the book word-for-
word. Try to put it in your own words as much as possible.
 Props: You must have one prop/object which represents each fact/main idea. You need to use a
3-Dimensional object. Each prop should relate to each main point, so that means 3 props in total. Don’t
use photos or pictures that cannot be seen. Holding up a piece of paper is not allowed. You also are not
allowed to use cell phones, laptops or plastic water bottles as props. Please look at the video and the
link to the article about using props found on Moodle. Props must be visible, creative and must
appropriately represent the main point. Also, remember to hold up the props long enough for them to
be seen and effective in the speech.
Here is the order of what you should say in your Textbook Talk:
o ATTENTION GETTER (Please start the speech with an attention getter and NOT, “My name is…” or “My topic is…” Also, the sample speech in Moodle by Nicolle starts with a mention of Covid. This is because our class went online in Spring 2020. PLEASE do not start your speech with a mention of Covid or that you wish this class could be in person–just think of a clever opening. Please see the “Introductions and Conclusions” section for ideas.)
o PREVIEW OF MAIN POINTS
o
TRANSITION
o MAIN POINT ONE (FIRST POINT)
o
TRANSITION
o MAIN POINT TWO (SECOND POINT)
o
TRANSITION
o MAIN POINT THREE (THIRD POINT)
o REVIEW MAIN POINTS
o VIVID ENDING (
End the speech with something clever. Please see the “Introductions and Conclusions” section for ideas.)
Do NOT read the information from the book word-for-word in your speech
 You are “teaching” this information and it should be in your own words, but obviously based on
the textbook material.
You should use no more than 3 note cards for your speech (write on one side only). Don’t write
notes out word for word, because if you do that, you will read the speech. Please read the
“Suggestions for Using Note Cards” on Moodle
here is an example of what video looks like finished, all you have to do is make the script and I will handle making the video myself.
To be repeated, all that needs to be done is the script for this 4 minute video, as I will be making the video myself.
