One good and thoughtful paragraph for each question
This is based on the Kant reading titled ‘Groundings of the Metaphysics of Morals’ (Cahn, pp. 1113-1140). Please be sure that you have carefully read this reading as well as the e-lecture on Kant’s Ethics (E-LECTURE 9.1) before you do this.
Explain as fully as possible Kant’s Good Will. What are those categories of things that according to Kant are good but are not good without qualification? Why is that so for Kant? When is the will a good will?
Differentiate between the hypothetical imperative and the categorical imperative. Which is moral imperative? Why so, for Kant?
Cite and quote completely the passage from the Kant reading of each of the three formulations of Kant’s Categorical Imperative. If do not have access to the Cahn text, you can also quote them from E-LECTURE 9.1.
Differentiate between treating someone merely as means and treating someone always as an end. What is it about humans that humans are ends-in-themselves? How does Kant differentiate between a thing and a person?
Differentiate between treating someone as “means to an end” and treating someone “merely as means to an end.” Which one violates the humanity principle of Kant? Why so, for Kant?
