Objectives:
Identify alternative nomenclature, and why it’s different from current nomenclature.
Discuss neurobiology and how it relates to prescribing psychotropic medications, including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and neuroanatomy.
Identify different psychotropic drug structures and mechanism.
Week 2 questions
1. Cytochrome P450 enzyme system – How does this impact psychotropic medications that you may prescribe? — Do any medications bypass this system? If so, give an example.
2. What are the 3 neurotransmitters of the monoamine system? Describe where each is produced, where they are distributed in the brain and what is their function.
3. What is the difference between pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics? How does the influence how you might prescribe a medication?
4. What does second messenger modifier mean? What is a second messenger modifier trying to achieve?
5. What do the terms tolerance and sensitization mean? How will this influence your prescribing patterns?
6. Describe Substantia nigra and Nigrostriatal pathways – What neurotransmitter(s) are produced or found there? –Why is each pathway important? — Why would this be important to know when prescribing psychotropic medications?
7. Describe the limbic system, –What structures does it include? — What neurotransmitter(s) are produced or found there? — Why is it’s important in psychiatry? — What role does it have in pharmacology?
8. What is GABA? — where is it found? — what does it do? — What is the function of glutamate?
9. What is the role of histamine in the brain and why is this important when considering prescribing psychotropic medications?
10. Describe VTA (Ventral Tegmental Area) –What neurotransmitter(s) are produced or found there? — Why would it be important to know its function when prescribing psychotropic medications?
11. Mesolimbic and Mesocortical pathways: — Describe function of each; What Neurotransmitters are involved? —What role each plays in pharmacology?
12. Pons and locus coeruleus: — Describe function or importance of each? — What neurotransmitter(s) are produced or involved in these pathways?
