– Movie Analysis –
The movie I picked was The Proposal and the themes would be relationship development and its connection to each member’s self-concept. As well as the theories of relationship development. These would be found in Chapter 4.
This project contains two separate components. The first is a written assignment, which is worth 20% of your final grade. The second is an oral presentation of approximately 3-4 minutes, which is worth 10% of your final grade.
The purpose of this assignment is to test your ability to apply principles of interpersonal communication to simulated real-life examples. Be careful to provide specific examples from the movie for each principle you discuss AND to provide analysis linking your examples to the principles. Make sure you are in fact analyzing interpersonal communication (focus on two people) and that you are not merely labeling, but applying rules or principles. You will explain communication behaviors, in terms of communication concepts presented in a text chapter or chapters.
For example, to identify two members of different cultures talking and label it intercultural communication would not meet the goals of the assignment. Rather, a movie centered on two members of different cultures might illustrate differences in contexts, power distances, and time orientations, and you could analyze how one person seeks to minimize miscommunication. In the same movie a nice illustration of culture shock might be found. Your analysis should have a focus, like a theme; however, you may touch upon concepts from other chapters as well. In this example, listening, perception, and non-verbal communication are likely to affect the intercultural communication you’re analyzing.
Advice: The key to success on this project is to think “analysis”. For example, if you simply describe a scene or conversation between two people, that is summary, not analysis. Analysis requires looking beyond the scene or event in the movie. If a character in the film acted a certain way, why did he or she do so? Did it have to do with cultural background? Was it their perception of a situation that prompted the character to act a certain way? Or was it their self-concept that led to their success or downfall?
The paper must be finely crafted – well-written, grammatically correct, spell checked, and extremely well organized. Your paper should reflect your best effort.
Format -Use a formal writing style (intro, thesis, conclusion, transitions between ideas) with correct grammatical structure, spelling, and word choice. A works cited page at the end of the essay should include any references (including your text) you used.
Your complete written assignment will include:
A cover page with your name and an original title for your paper
A minimum of 5 typed pages of analysis
Themes for this project could include: the role of self-awareness in interpersonal communication, perceptions and miscommunication, conflict resolution, theories of relationship development, cultural expectations and their effects on communication in family, classroom, work, and intercultural settings, relationship development and its connection to each member’s self-concept. I will be also doing the theories of relationship development.
