In LL254 Composition and Research, you are required to complete a research essay assignment. The purpose of this assignment is to develop the following critical competencies:
To think critically: The student will be able to analyze information, distinguish fact from opinion, organize thoughts, and construct meaningful conclusions.
To communicate effectively in writing: The student will be able to develop a thesis statement, organize ideas effectively, support positions taken, write in a coherent manner, use appropriate sentence structure and grammar, and document references and citations using the APA format in text and on References pages. Please refer to the Academic Resources Center’s website on citing sources as a reference tool for proper format.

Students must use at least six sources for the project. You must also include at least one direct quote per paragraph and at least one paraphrase in each body paragraph that are properly cited.
You must submit the following items:

The research essay will expand upon the outline to explore your topic in a five paragraph essay: Introduction (the last sentence must be a three part thesis statement that clearly explains the points explored in the essay), three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The essay must be at least three full pages of text as well as a separate References page. You must include at least one properly used direct quotation in each paragraph of the research essay and at least one paraphrase in each body paragraph.
Reflection Letter
The reflection letter reviews the process involved in completing the portfolio project, measures your academic growth as a result of the project, and applies this growth to your personal and professional goals. The 3-paragraph reflection letter must be typed in block style for business letters as you learned in keyboarding class. A template for the reflection letter, including specific questions you must answer, will be provided by your instructor.
All LL254 students will be assigned an article for the portfolio timed writing, which will be different from the midterm and final timed writing articles. Based on the article, the student will be expected to write a five paragraph essay with proper use of direct quotes and paraphrasing. Students are given 90 minutes to complete this exam, and it is assessed using the Holistic Scoring Guide. The instructor will place this exam in the folder on the day the portfolio is submitted, and it will be graded by the Portfolio Committee.
PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS
All portfolio forms and publishs must be typed in Times New Roman, 12-pt font.
You are responsible for meeting the deadlines for each portfolio step as assigned by your professor. Assignments must be submitted on time in order to ensure the professor has time to carefully review your work and assist you in completing all of the portfolio steps.
While your professor will review your outline and essay publish, you are responsible for revising and proofreading all of your work carefully for grammar and typos. You are encouraged to attend Writing Support Workshops in order to improve your editing skills. In addition, you may visit the virtual Academic Resources Center to have additional publishs of your work reviewed by tutors.
Data Based Research Used
Part 1B: Research Experience
For this part of the project, I started researching on the internet defining my keywords which were changes in food production supply. new and emerging bacteria, and cost effectiveness. I made sure that the sources I used were reliable. I defined reliable sources by whether:
1. An expert wrote an article for a newspaper, magazine, reputable website with no Google advertisements on it.
2 An expert was quoted in an article that appears in a newspaper, magazine, reputable website, etc.
3. The source contained facts and figures that can be proven.
4. A government website listed statistics or facts from a survey or some kind of research.
The first web source I came across was Statement from FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., and Deputy Commissioner Frank Yiannas on new steps to strengthen FDA’s food safety program for 2020 and beyond: The President’s 2020 Budget includes new resources to advance the agency’s food safety program and expand food safety monitoring. I knew this was a reliable source because the article provides information related to food safety and cost effectiveness that I can use to help in my research and overall essay. I used the following facts from this source to support my thesis:
• As part of the President’s 2020 budget, new funding was proposed across multiple aspects of the food safety system. New investments must be made to prevent problems from happening under the FSMA while also embracing new innovations.
• “This landmark piece of legislation represented a sea change in food safety. It moved the FDA from a posture of response to one that prevents problems from occurring in the first place.”
• “We also recognize that our most effective toolkit for domestic food safety is not identical to the optimal toolkit for imported food safety. Our budget request reflects those differing needs. Our proposed budget makes other critical investments to help the FDA ensure a more secure and modern food safety framework.”
The next source I used from the internet was Global Aquaculture Market to Garner $378.00 Billion by 2027: Allied Market Research: Increase in fish production to meet food supply and changes in lifestyle, rise in demand for protein-rich diet, and expanding food & beverage and retail market drive the growth of the global aquaculture market. The market across Asia-Pacific dominated in 2019, accounting for nearly two-thirds of total revenue. At-home consumption of fish products has increased during the lockdown in several countries. I knew this was a reliable source because it contains information on expected changes in the food supply. I used the following facts from this source to support my thesis:
• There’s an increase in fish production to meet food supply changes. Rise in demand for protein, technological advancements, and expanding food and beverage and retail market drive the growth of the global aquaculture market.
• In 2019 fresh water fish accounted for nearly three-fourths of the fish market supply.
• In 2019 Asia-Pacific market accounted for nearly two-thirds of the fish revenue.
Once I found my Internet sources, I continued building on my research by visiting Plaza College’s virtual library. The first database source I came across was Food Safety And Security Is Top Of Mind For Consumers: New global study from Mars Global Food Safety Center finds consumers believe food safety and security is a top global issue. I knew this was a reliable source because the article talks about a study that shows food safety is a global issue. I used the following facts from this source to support my thesis:
• According to a new study conducted by the Mars Global Food Safety Center (GFSC), more than fifty-two percent of respondents from the U.S., U.K., and China believe that food safety is a global issue.
• Dean Crean states that “New food safety threats, like those posed by COVID-19, are constantly emerging through a combination of factors including global warming, increased globalization of trade, as well as changes in agriculture practices and food production.”
• The Mars Global Food Safety Center hosted high profile training events and research programs in three crucial areas of food safety; mycotoxin risk management, microbial risk management, and food integrity.
The next database source I used from a different database is International push to improve food safety: International Food Safety Conference opens with call for greater global cooperation. I knew this was a reliable source because the article talks about preventing unsafe food from causing ill-health and hampering progress towards sustainable development. I used the following facts from this source to support my thesis:
• “Food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites, toxins or chemicals causes more than 600 million people to fall ill and 420 000 to die worldwide every year.”
• Illnesses associated with unsafe foods can overload healthcare systems, damage economies, trade and tourism.
• Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization stated “Food should be a source of nourishment and enjoyment, not a cause of disease or death. Unsafe food is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths every year, but has not received the political attention it deserves. Ensuring people have access to safe food takes sustained investment in stronger regulations, laboratories, surveillance and monitoring. In our globalized world, food safety is everyone’s issue.”
