In the last section of the class we examined intercultural challenges. This assignment requires you to apply your knowledge to an encounter involving intercultural miscommunication described in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. Fadiman illustrates how Lia Lee’s family, and various healthcare professionals, encountered numerous verbal and nonverbal instances of miscommunication during Lia’s illness.
Select and analyze one of the cultural misunderstandings described in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down.
Address the following areas. Please number each section of your response accordingly:
1. Briefly describe the context – the individuals involved and the general topic of the misunderstanding.
2. Describe the experience of Person A in the situation, using “I” to represent that person’s thoughts. Emphasize how they were acting in an appropriate way for their culture. Provide as much detail as needed to present the event clearly.
3. Describe the same misunderstanding from Person B’s (the other person’s) perspective, using “I” to represent that person’s thoughts, with an emphasis on how that person was acting appropriately for their culture.
4. Discuss critically some of the ways in which the two people were perceiving the situation differently, based on their cultural experiences. How did cultural differences contribute to the misunderstanding? How might a knowledge of cultural differences allow us to assess the event overall?
5. Discuss how you can apply the lessons learned from analyzing this misunderstanding to your own responsibilities as an intercultural communicator, and to any possible future interactions you may have within the area of intercultural communication.
This assignment should be five to seven pages in length, double-spaced. Please upload a Word document (see syllabus for format requirements).
