GUIDELINES FOR MOVIE ANALYSIS
Select a movie about a special population. The following are a few examples of older traditional movies about special populations that are acceptable for this assignment; however, you may select from other movies that are more contemporary:
A Beautiful Mind Bastard Out of Carolina Boys Don’t Cry Crash Dances with Wolves I am Sam Malcolm X Philadelphia Sleeping with the Enemy
After you have selected your movie, provide the following information:
Identify the special population portrayed in the movie
Identify the major themes in the movie
Discuss how the “isms” (e.g., racism, sexism, classism, ageism, etc.) are illustrated in the movie
What did you learn about the special population represented in the movie? Is what you learned in the movie supported by the literature on this special population?
How well did the movie “represent” the special population? Was it stereotypical? Was it realistic?
Choose three academic peer reviewed journal articles about the special population represented in the movie. How do these articles support or not support the themes in the movie? (HINT: Time magazine is not a journal! Do not hesitate to use the electronic journals at Joyner library which can be accessed via the Internet).
This 5-7 page paper must be typed using APA 7th style. If you are not familiar with APA, go to www.apastyle.com for a quick review. Include a reference page and a cover page but do not count them in the 5-7 page requirement. Discuss the paper initially with a representative of the ECU Writing Center if you need assistance.
