Furries and Native American gangs. Cosplayers and skaters. These are the subcultures you’ve read about so far. When discussing subcultures, we tend to focus on the differences between them. For example, gang members and furries seem to be complete opposites. However, might subcultures also have similarities?
For this essay assignment, you need to identify 3-4 similarities among the assigned four subcultures and come to a claim that addresses a “So What?” analysis. The similarities don’t have to be found in all four subcultures. For example, one similarity might be in two of the four subcultures; another similarity might be found in all four. Don’t just summarize the articles; you need to analyze the significance of the similarities you identify . What do you think it means, for instance, that these subcultures have similarities X, Y, and Z but are still considered separate (“sub-“) from the mainstream culture?
The following questions can get you started, but don’t think of them as guiding your organization: What are the characteristics of these subcultures? What do the subcultures value or believe in? What motivates the members of the subcultures? And ultimately, why does this comparison of these subcultures matter? What claim are you trying to make about subcultures?
In addition to exploring the topic, you’ll need to quote from at least three sources from the Sources list, and only from this list. Do not use any outside sources. You need to follow proper MLA formatting and documentation (in-text citations and a works cited). The final draft must be 4-6 pages (this does not include the works cited).
