Too Tired? Too Anxious? Need More Time? We’ve got your back.
For the Pathophysiology/Epidemiology term paper, the student will choose a pathophysiological process of interest and discuss it thoroughly, as indicated in the rubric below. This research will help the student learn more about the disease and assist in clinical practice. The student will substantially discuss the diagnosis, signs and symptoms, lab values, diagnostic tests, nursing and medical management, epidemiological concepts, and reflection.
Specific detailed paper guidelines are provided in the rubric below, including required references and the late policy. (See below)
Required Sections
Total Possible Points
Points Awarded and Remarks
**Introduction to Parkinson’s
In the introduction paragraph, explain to your reader in basic terms what it is, what it does and things that influence developing the health problem.
Definition of the disease process or disorder
Describe the pathophysiology
Cellular level
Tissue changes
Body systems affected
Genomic and genetic factors; if none, state it.
Modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors
This section should be referenced/cited with at least one peer-reviewed scholarly journal resource and/or your pathophysiology text. See References.
History, Physical and Diagnostic findings of Parkinson’s
In this section, identify how a clinician will know they have a patient with the health problem. Write (on average, one paragraph for the subjective (history), objective (physical) and diagnostic findings.
Clearly identify the test, history or physical finding that provides a definitive diagnosis, if one exists.
Include all physical findings and clinical assessment data associated with the disease.
Discuss laboratory and diagnostic findings (such as radiology) associated with the disease process
Discuss psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual aspects relevant to the disease. If there are none, state it (but there is often nursing research about the “lived experience”)
This section should be referenced/cited with at least one peer-reviewed scholarly journal resource. See References.
*Medical and Nursing Management of Parkinson’s
In this section, discuss the medical and nursing management of the health problem. Write at least two paragraphs to discuss the following:
Medical management
First-line pharmacologic therapies
Ongoing monitoring and periodicity for follow-up (for example, A1C quarterly for diabetes, or TSH for hypothyroidism; how often should the nurse practitioner have a follow-up visit for the health problem)
Collaborative care indicated (for example, if the nurse practitioner should order: physical therapy, dietician referral or special diet, orthopedic surgeries, glucose monitoring, etc).
Disease prognosis and chronic care trajectory if indicated (for example, 5 year survival rates for a specific type of cancer; or is someone expected to completely recover)
Nursing management
Patient education (for example, peak flow meter monitoring for a person with asthma)
Strategies for daily living (for example, early morning warm shower for rheumatoid arthritis)
Do any tools exist for evaluating coping (for example, headache diary for migraines)
Community resources (for example, the Cystic Fibrosis foundation or the American Cancer Society)
This section should be referenced/cited with at least one peer-reviewed scholarly journal resource; many students find it helpful to use two articles or one article and your pathophysiology text. See References.
*Epidemiology of Parkinson’s
This section should have a minimum of 3 paragraphs, and should provide critical appraisal of two peer-reviewed epidemiology research studies published within the last 5 years.
Paragraph 1:
discuss the health problem’s natural history
U.S. or world-wide incidence
costs of care to individuals and society (if known; hint the CDC often has information on this).
Paragraph 2 is a level 2 heading for your first epidemiology article. Be sure to paraphrase this information into your own words and do not use quotes.
Describe the research question.
Describe the sample (research participants)
Describe any specific parameters of the study
Were there any treatments, risk factors or interventions? Describe them.
What were their findings? Include results statistics in plain language; do not use quotations (hint-you may need your epidemiology text to help you understand statistical definitions).
How did this research study compare to what you previously knew or had seen in your registered nurse practice?
Paragraph 3 is a level 2 heading for your second epidemiology article.
Describe the research question.
Describe the sample (research participants)
Describe any specific parameters of the study
Were there any treatments, risk factors or interventions? Describe them.
What were their findings? Include results statistics in plain language; do not use quotations.
How did this research study compare to what you previously knew or had seen in your registered nurse practice?
This section should be referenced/cited with at least two peer-reviewed scholarly journal resources. See References.
*Reflection
Discuss how the research findings will guide your practice as a future nurse practitioner.
This section should be referenced/cited with at least one peer-reviewed scholarly journal resource. See References.
*****Grammar & Format
The paper must contain the five sections/with section heading provided in the rubric (hint-each section should be a level one heading; the epidemiology is the only section that needs level two headings [one for each article]).
Do not use running heads (at the top of the page)
Use page numbers per APA
Correct grammar, sentence structure, and 7th edition APA formatting are required.
***The paper body should be at least four pages and no more than six pages (excluding the title page and reference page).
Double spaced, and Times Roman 12 pt. font.
Use of quotations can result in a points deduction.
Plagiarism is: copying and pasting, not citing, not giving author credit. Be sure to follow APA guidelines.
*References
***All resources must be within five years.
***Five peer-reviewed scholarly journal resources are required for the assignment. A textbook, Wikipedia, website, blog, report sheet, care fact sheet etc. are not considered peer-reviewed scholarly resources.
You may use your textbook, the CDC website, and care fact sheets IN ADDITION to the minimum five required
