Too Tired? Too Anxious? Need More Time? We’ve got your back.
First, read the story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. (Please make sure you take your time with this story and read it carefully. It is not written chronologically, meaning the events of the story happen out of order. This can make it a little confusing!) Next, read the “historical context” document about the story. Then write a summary and response to “A Rose for Emily.”
Some questions to consider:
1) What is the timeline of events in this story?
2) Why does Emily seem to have trouble understanding or accepting the concept of death?
3) Why is the story told in the collective first person? Who is the narrator? What does that tell us about how society responds to unpleasant situations like Emily’s?
4) Does the town know about what Emily has done? Why do they let her get away with it?
5) How are white women treated differently from Black women during this time period?
