ESSAY 2 DIRECTIONS
Based on your reading of “Colored Women of America” by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper and “Club Work of Colored Women” by Mary Church Terrell (Bracey Readings 8 and 10); “Plessy v. Ferguson” (Bracey Reading 11); and “Letters of Black Migrants” edited by Carter G. Woodson and “Long Old Road” by Horace Cayton (Bracey Readings 12 and 13), address the following questions in your essay:
Part One:
Based on your reading of “Colored Women in America,” how does Harper assess the progress of African-American women following emancipation? According to Terrell in “Club Work of Colored Women,” what have the been the roles of black women’s clubs? How have they contributed to racial uplift? What differences do you see in how Harper and Terrell discuss the role(s) of black women in the African-American community? Be thorough and specific in your answers.
Part Two:
IN YOUR OWN WORDS, how does Justice Henry Billings Brown present the Majority Opinion by the Supreme Court in “Plessy v. Ferguson”? What arguments are made by the Court in the Majority Opinion that allow them to draw the conclusion that “separate is equal”? How does Justice John Marshall Harlan present the Dissenting Opinion? What arguments are made by Harlan that challenge the Majority Opinion? What are YOUR reactions to both positions? Be thorough and specific in your answers.
Part Three:
Based on your reading of “Letters of Black Migrants,” how do African Americans in the South articulate their desire to leave? What reasons do they give for wanting to leave the South? How does Cayton in “Long Old Road” describe the reality of life in the Urban North? How does he discuss the social and economic conditions of African Americans in the North as opposed to the South? Do you believe his observations affirmed the hopes that African Americans had for a better life in the North? Be thorough and specific in your answers.
