In order to establish a safe and productive learning environment, teachers must communicate and enforce clear expectations and consequences from the beginning of the school year (Megawati, 2020). As a teacher, I am aware that clear classroom standards and expectations assist students in understanding what is expected of them, thereby promoting an environment conducive to learning. Clear behavioral standards and effective classroom management can enhance academic performance, improve student involvement, and decrease disruptive behavior. Both inside and outside of the classroom, self-regulation and self-discipline are necessary for success. It is crucial that students comprehend the behavioral expectations of their teachers (Jones & Jones, 2020).
Consider, for example, the expectation that students would arrive on time and prepared to learn. This falls under the category of classroom expectations. Clearly, a student is not achieving this objective if he or she is chronically tardy or unprepared for class. The teacher is then able to engage the student in a conversation about the significance of the topic and how the student’s behavior can be improved. By consistently enforcing this expectation, the teacher is able to instill a sense of order and routine in the classroom. This can be beneficial for the students because it can help them stay on track and maintain concentration.
The rules for my classroom have been altered a bit throughout my career, but these are rules I believe enhance the learning environment in my classroom.
1. Respect all individuals, including your teachers, your classmates, and yourself. Treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself.
2. Be responsible: Accept responsibility for your actions and education. Completion on time, preparation for class, and participation in class discussions are all required.
3. Be safe by following all safety regulations. Maintain an orderly and spotless classroom.
4. Be sincere in your interactions. Lying or cheating will not be tolerated.
5. Be Positive: Maintain a positive attitude toward your classmates and your own education. Help and encourage your classmates.
The purpose of these rules is to create a safe and respectful learning environment and encourage students to take responsibility for their education. When expectations are spelled out in writing, students are able to comprehend what is expected of them. This clarifies any ambiguity and promotes a sense of routine and order in the classroom.
Proverbs 10:28 states, “The hope of the righteous brings joy, but the expectation of the wicked will perish.” This verse means that the result is a prosperous future for those who obey God. Those who choose sin are doomed to destruction. In the present and in the future, obedience to God is essential. Sin will never triumph. This is also relevant to education because if students do not behave appropriately in class, their education will suffer.

A significant part of classroom management involves maintaining order and routine that redirects off-task behaviors before they become misbehavior. Biblical teachings highly emphasize order and routine as critical life measures; for example, 1 Corinthians 14:40 urges that people ensure that all they do is fit and orderly, thus reducing confusion (New International Version, 2023). One fundamental behavioral expectation includes keeping the classroom clean. A clean classroom maximizes learning experiences, increasing creativity and productivity (Abbas, 2020). Having a clean classroom also ensures that the student internalizes the significance of cleanliness that they practice in environments other than the classroom. Therefore, rules such as no paper throwing or sharpening of pencils on floors or stacking books away on their appropriate shelves instill the behavioral expectation of keeping the classroom clean, which becomes routine and ensures orderliness.
Most classrooms embrace a lecture style where students sit and wait for their lessons and only stand once the lesson is complete. However, many researchers are today advocating for walking in classrooms. Sitting for long hours decreases the productivity of the learners. McMullen et al. (2019) established through their study that students found movement in class fun, expressed a better grasp of academic content, developed their fitness, and positively embraced the inclusion of the strategy in their daily routines. Movement within the classroom enhances the learning environment by giving the learners control over their behavior, engaging in collaborations, and better preparing the body for learning.
Additionally, respect for classroom equipment and furniture is another critical behavioral expectation that increases order and routine in the classroom. Students may find it challenging to understand that classroom equipment does not magically replenish but requires money for repairs during damage. Advocating for respect for classroom equipment and furniture begins with the teacher’s emphasis on the importance of the activity. For example, highlighting that plucking pages of a textbook will hinder the proper learning of future students using the same textbook. Therefore, having strict rules on proper equipment and furniture handling is critical in enhancing the learning environment of current and future students. Also, avoiding damage to non-consumable classroom assets reduces accidents realizing a safe learning environment.
Our classroom rules:
Inside, walking feet are happy feet
Place supplies back in their proper place
Make good choices
Be safe
Do your best
Respect personal space
Gentle touches
Take care of your belongings
Try three times, ask a friend for help, then a teacher
