Nursing informatics manages and communicates information in nursing practice (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2021). Nurse informaticists control communication between the IT and clinical departments, and they promote collaboration among different departments by sharing the information necessary for promoting patient safety (Mosier et al., 2019). In my healthcare organization, nurse informaticists are data experts who communicate the technological processes and the reason behind them to the clinical staff. They bridge the gap between information technology and clinical practices.
In the healthcare organization, the nurse informaticists and the technology specialists help store and manage patient information. They ensure the systems correctly store and retrieve patients’ information. Nurse informaticists ensure that patient information is stored well and can be retrieved by authorized personnel. Also, they play a crucial role in communicating and implementing new processes at the healthcare organization. They are supportive and help clinical staff understand the care facility’s information technology system. Nurse informaticists interact with every department in the healthcare facility to share the necessary information for improving patient safety and quality of care. Despite this, I have had challenging experiences with nurse informaticists and technology specialists. The challenges were majorly due to system delays. Sometimes, especially when there are many patients, the system becomes slow, and thus clinical staff may need help to retrieve or save information. This slows down care delivery, thus affecting the quality of care the institution offers. During such times, nurse informaticists and technology specialists recommend restarting the system or being patient, which may be challenging in a care facility.
The healthcare organization may improve interactions between nurse informaticists and clinical staff by creating an annual meeting where the two departments share their concerns and propose solutions. The meeting will allow clinicians to communicate their struggles when dealing with the informatics department while they equally do so. This meeting will allow the informatics department and clinicians to agree on improving their interaction. The continued evolution of nursing informatics as a specialty will likely reduce the physical interaction of healthcare providers (Wilcha, 2020). As technology evolves, healthcare providers may easily share information virtually on different platforms, thus reducing the need for them to meet and discuss patient care physically.
