Critique of Research Article 1
A. Use the journal article for which I have sent you the free text. It is research-based.
B. Read selected article carefully, if necessary more than once. Do not use the text of the abstract for your critique. Focus on both the substance of the paper.
Prepare your critique under the following headings. Justify it by giving examples from the article, with page number, in your own words. Do not use quotations.
1. Statement of the Problem or purpose
Does the paper have a background/introduction for the stated problem? How long is it? Review its adequacy and relevance. Does it justify the problem?
Did the authors use a heading for the problem? Review its clarity and suitability.
Did the authors use a purpose for the study? If they did, how was it different from the problem? Is there a transition?
Can you determine the focus of the writers? Mention the problem in one sentence. Are the utility and significance of the problem demonstrated in a convincing manner?
2. Research Questions/Hypothesis
How these have been treated in the paper? How detailed are these? What terms have been used? Comment on clarity, relevance, specificity, etc.
3. Definition of Terms
Was there a need to define certain concepts used in the paper? Are any concepts defined? If yes, are the definitions clear? Did author/s use a heading or a separate section?
4. Review of Related Literature
Does the literature reviewed show the evolution of the research problem? Is its relationship to this research shown clearly? Is the review adequate? Is it well organized? How long is it (approximate length in words)? Is it up-to-date? If yes, show how? Review the adequacy, recency, adequacy, transition, etc. Discuss how well it is cited. While doing this critique, you need to keep in view that the research might have been conducted in 2011-12 and the paper was published in 2013.
