CHAPTER FOUR THE COGNITIVE APPROACH I VISION, PATTERN RECOGNITION, AND ATTENTION
Question A (4 pts): What are the 2 major goals of visual perception. In lecture we discussed how, after early visual processing in the occipital lobe, visual processing flows along 2 pathways to 2 separate cortical visual sub-systems in the brain each emphasizing one of 2 major visual perceptual goals. Explain.
Question B (4 pts): Explain each of the 4 major challenges to object identification discussed in lecture.
Question C (8 pts): Explain each of the basic steps of Mid-Level (Perceptual Organization) processing of visual objects. Concrete examples can be particularly helpful. There were 5 distinct steps covered in lecture.
Question D (6 pts): Explain the Recognition by Components theory of 3D object recognition (RBC, Biedermann). Also, describe the experiment discussed in lecture that supports RBC theory. How does this evidence support the idea of view independent visual perception?
Question E (8 pts): Explain Fei-Fei Li’s project to bring AI ability of the meaningful interpretation of digital photos of natural scenes up to the level of a human child (see video link of her TED Talk from 2015 in lecture notes).
Question F (7 pts): Compare and contrast Inattention Blindness and Change Blindness (see lecture notes on attention). Provide a research example discussed in lecture (or a video linked into lecture notes) that demonstrates each of these attention effects.
