Case Study The South China Sea Territorial Disputes
Instructions:
The overarching objective of this course is to provoke critical thought, inquiry, and analysis by providing you with a range of evidence and hypotheses for problem set requiring the use of intelligence to craft solutions to be carried out via policy and military action. The problem sets explored were chosen for this course because they were:
– Massive, meaning the scope of the problem with respect to required resources and intensity;
– Complex, meaning the number of inter-related factors involved in the decision/consequence model; and
– Wicked, meaning that multiple points of view competed for attention with multiple interests at multiple levels – none of whom would ever be happy with whatever “solution” is found.
Do so by:
1. Providing a 250-300 word summary about your chosen case and how it meets the above requirements.
2. Provide a 1-2 page outline which provides an initial look at the evidence/materials you might use. Your outline will have structure, reference respectable sources, and provide 3-5 directions of thought (example, the current case study about Operation Downfall is structured around and weighs the geographic plans and merits of invading Japan against dropping “the bomb” from political, ethical, and similar perspectives/considerations). Citations must be provided but I’m not nit-picking MLA format etc…
The rubric for scoring will be:
30 points for spelling and grammar (3rd person, active voice, double-spaced, correctly spelled and punctuated). I will not correct these things – you will just get a score and reference to areas which need work.
50 points for selecting and arguing for your case using geographic thought and methods in a reasonable, prudent, and well ordered manner (design and argue for your case study).
50 points for selecting appropriate initial references in your outline (investigate and formulate a plan based on evidence and research).
50 points for selecting and briefly describing how you might employ visual story-telling/maps to present the case (creatively synthesize visualizations which utilize methods and skills from across the curriculum and your expertise)
20 points for selecting a method to deliver your exam materials in a way that impresses me with your brilliance and creativity. I’m going “dealer’s choice” on this one…
