The purpose of this short writing assignment (2 pages) is to begin the process of meeting human needs through promoting justice. This journey begins with reflection as students begin to really observe the world around them beginning with home. This assignment will give students an opportunity to begin collecting and synthesizing information from their immediate environment, looking for marginalized communities, and writing short, succinct, scholarly essays.
The main focus of the paper is to define one’s neighborhood or community, explain who the predominate residents are (and are not), and to provide examples concerning current issues faced. It ends by asking students to make a recommendation. Students are required to use 5 in-text, APA citations, are limited in the number of non-scholarly sources they may use, and are asked to provide a brief bibliography.
