Part 1: Cultural Studies and Media Representation of Teenagers (Literature Review)
While the field of media studies is broad, a “cultural studies” approach offers a specific lens through which to
examine media texts. Provide a working definition of “cultural studies” that draws upon the literature in the
field, and then use that definition to articulate how scholars have used cultural studies approaches to examining
representations of teenagers in dramatic film and television. What scholars or practitioners have made the most
significant interventions in that area, and what has been their contributions?
Part 2: Gender, Sexuality, and Teenagers in Dramatic Television (Analysis)
Choose a television show such as Pretty Little Liars, Teen Wolf, Riverdale, The Fosters, Stranger Things, Outer Banks, or Ginny & Georgia, and perform a “cultural studies” analysis of how the gender and sexual politics of teenagers are represented.
While this section may draw upon your previous literature review, the primary goal is to advance a new
argument of your own with a clearly articulated thesis. After your analysis is complete, reflect upon what we
gain from such an approach that may be absent in other approaches?
