For your response paper you will pursue an idea arising from one of the assigned texts further, and also include a text not studied in class as part of your argument and analysis.
This assignment is quite open in terms of what you will write on, and how you will approach your writing. The key is to make sure there is a sophisticated critical engagement with the material. Like any standard literary essay, you can choose to write about any element of music and or poetry: character, setting, themes, language, context, style, narrative point of view etc.
Pursue your interest.
A few Basics:
• Make a cogent argument about the texts.
• Support your argument with textual and contextual evidence.
Bear these tips in mind:
• Stay focused: Do not try to write about different aspects of a text, unless you bring all those parts together under one coherent idea.
• Be sure to engage closely with the text, and where you discuss extra-textual material, make sure that there is a text-driven center where your discussion is anchored.
• While your focus should be on the specifics of the text under consideration, always bear the course title and focus in mind (ie. Course description and goals), and where relevant, show how the issue you are addressing is connected to some facet of our larger concerns.
• Your response should be approximately 5 pages (double-space), not counting the bibliography.
