Too Tired? Too Anxious? Need More Time? We’ve got your back.
Mary Jensen applies her lipstick and smiles into the mirror. She’s got a second date tonight with a friend’s cousin who just moved to town. Jeremy is everything she’s been looking for in a partner: taller than her, with a sarcastic personality and great taste in music. She’s excited but also nervous about where the relationship could go. Mary has perinatally acquired HIV, and when she disclosed her status to her last boyfriend before being sexually active, he turned into a different person. She would be crushed if the same thing happened with Jeremy.
It’s hard for Mary to be vulnerable with new people, maybe partly because she was adopted as a young child and has had trust issues. She has worked hard to overcome these feelings in therapy. Still, sometimes her depression and anxiety have become too much to bear, causing her to become non-adherent to her ART medications.
She checks her phone and sees that Jeremy has texted that he’s on his way to pick her up and feels her heart flutter with nerves. She closes her eyes, takes several cleansing breaths, then zips up her coat to wait by the door.
1. How can Jeremy protect himself from acquiring HIV if he and Mary become sexually active?
2. If Mary and Jeremy decide to have a family together, what are some ways to prevent transmission of HIV to their child?
