Characteristics of a Title
a. Every writing should have a title (the name of the work given by the writer)
b. The title is NEVER the name of the assignment (Unless instructed)
c. Capitalize all principal words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.). Do not capitalize articles, prepositions, or conjunctions when they fall in the middle of a title.
i. Example 1: “My Life as a School Teacher”
ii. Example 2: “Life before College”
iii. Example 3: “The Many Essays of an English Class”
d. MLA titles are placed at the top of the paper, centered
i. Do Not italicize or bold or underline your title for your work.
ii. It should also be the same font type and size as the rest of the paper (ex: MLA is 12 font size). No extra spacing is needed before or after either.
e. General titles from others that you may include in your papers
i. Books Italic
ii. Newspaper articles Quotation Marks
iii. Poems Quotation Marks
iv. Movies Italic
v. General Rule: bigger body of works are so big the lean over and “italicized” while smaller body of works are so tiny so the go in “quotation marks”
vi. Fun Fact: No title is underlined any more in MLA because now we have computers to italicize instead of the old typewriters which couldn’t.
