I feel the title ‘To Build a Fire’ is apt for this gripping story, which revolves around a young immature man’s struggle to build a fire. He failed to do so simple a job, when he needed the warmth of a flame to fight off the fatal cold in that hostile landscape. He did succeed once or twice, but, as ill luck could have it, he failed to steady the fire. To his horror, the match sticks fell off on the ice and his chances of starting a fire was gone forever.
The story is a poignant account of a gutsy young man’s fight with Nature. At every step, we notice his brave spirit of the man defying the doom and darkness that had shrouded the area. No doubt, he died, because he was foolhardy, but we can draw some lessons from his saga. The title ‘To Build a Fire’ is a simple and very appropriate one for this story.
